Eliot Spitzer has just recently scored a win over the music industry. New York's attorney general sued Sony BMG, a giant in the recording industry, for bribing radio stations to play certain music. Sony BMG admitted that some of its contractors had engaged in this illegal behavior, and settled out of court by paying $10 million in fines.

Record companies were able to bribe radio stations by using independent promoters, or music marketers. These independent promoters were paid millions of dollars from various record labels, and they in turn "bought" play lists from radio stations, and promoted the tunes of certain artists. This money essentially ended up coercing radio stations to play certain tunes on the radio. As part of the settlement, Sony BMG agreed to curtail its use of independent radio promotion. If this happens, there are going to be a lot of people looking for new marketing jobs.
