Thanks to the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence, automotive technicians of every stripe can demonstrate their knowledge and skills to potential employers and clients by obtaining ASE-certification.
What is ASE-Certification?
Before the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) certification program was developed in 1972, motorists had no standard means of knowing whether their mechanic was properly qualified to work on their car. However, ASE-certification has changed all that. ASE-certification is a nationally recognized credential that demonstrates an automotive mechanic's technical competency.
How Does ASE-Certification Work?
Twice a year, the independent, nonprofit National Institute of Automotive Service Excellence administers over 40 challenging service and repair tests, which are grouped together by specialty area. Those who pass at least one test and have worked in the field for at least two years earn ASE-certification. Those technicians who elect to take several different kinds of exams--and gain additional on-the-job experience--can work their way up to Master Technician status.
In order to maintain your ASE-certification, you must retest every five years to ensure that you are keeping up with the latest technology. The ASE-certification program offers eight different specialty area tests for auto technicians. In addition, there are tests for engine machinists, collision repair technicians, parts specialists, and other automotive service and repair specialties.
Consider ASE-Certification
According to the ASE, roughly 420,000 automotive professionals already have their ASE-certification. In fact, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, ASE-certification is the industry's standard credential for automotive service technicians. By obtaining ASE-certification, you'll be able to demonstrate to both customers and employers that you have the skills and knowledge necessary to service their vehicles.
