Shots of Brad and Angelina on the Kenyan Beach: Paparazzi or Photojournalism?

By Kelly Richardson

Those steamy pictures of Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie frolicking on the beach in Kenya brought over $500,000 to the photographer that shot them. The question remains, are these photos an example of honest photojournalism or sleazy paparazzi at work?

Without a doubt, photojournalism and paparazzi are forever connected depending upon your point of view. For some, taking pictures of the stars is an intrusion into their personal lives. However, some will say that this is just a person making a living in a photojournalism career. And the stars know that without pictures of them in the tabloids, their success would wane.

Famous Paparazzi Incidents:

  • Brad and Angelina. These two major movie stars were shot during a private vacation in Kenya shortly after the release of their movie Mr. and Mrs. Smith.
  • O.J. Simpson. The football star turned suspected murderer sent many photojournalism careers skyrocketing with snap shots of his home in Brentwood.
  • Lady Diana. Of course we all remember the run in with paparazzi that lead to the crash that resulted in her untimely death.

No matter what side of the fence you're on, you can earn a photojournalism degree and start a career telling stories with your camera. And if becoming a member of the paparazzi is not your bag, there are plenty of other jobs you can land with your photojournalism credentials. Let's take a look at a few of them.

Photojournalism Jobs:

  • Environment. Telling the tales of mountain ranges and river valleys, you will spend your days in exotic locals.
  • People. Movie stars not withstanding, there are so many interesting people in this world that need to have their story told.
  • Wars. Many a photojournalism career has been solidified with titillating shots from a major world war our continental conflict.
  • Animals. You can do a lot worse in your career choice than spending your days shooting endangered species in remote parts of the world.
