Before the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) established the ASE certification program in the 1970s, consumers had no way of knowing which mechanics knew what they were doing and which did not.
About the ASE
According to the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence, "ASE's mission is to improve the quality of vehicle repair and service through the testing and certification of repair and service professionals." In other words, if a mechanic has a badge indicating they have received ASE certification you can rest assured they know what they are doing.Who has ASE Certification?
At the current time, roughly 420,000 automotive repair professionals have their ASE Certification. ASE certificate holders work in all segments of the automotive industry. Some are ASE certified mechanics work in car and truck dealerships while others work in independent garages, service stations, and franchises.How Does ASE Certification Work
In order to get their ASE Certificate, candidates must register and take one (or more) of the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence's 40 different exams. These ASE Certification tests are grouped together in various special categories. While some of the ASE Certification tests cover the skill mechanics need for repairing and servicing automobiles, other tests are geared specifically for those who work on medium and heavy trucks as well as truck equipment.There are even ASE Certification tests for collision repair technicians, parts specialists and collision damage estimators. After successfully passing the exam and providing proof of two years of related work experience, the candidate becomes ASE certified. However, in order to remain certified, ASE certificate holders must take a new test every five years.
